Governor Evers Celebrates Retirement of Ya Yang1 min read

On Saturday, June 25th Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers Celebrated the Retirement of Ya Myyoufu Yang and his wife, Shoua Xao Chou Vang.

Ya Yang came with his family to the United States in 1976. He became one of the very first Hmong police officer in Akron, Ohio serving in the department from 1984 until 1991.

In 1992 he would become the first Hmong American elected to public office in Wisconsin as a School Board member on the Wausau School District. Later he would be the first Hmong person elected to the Wausau City Council and County Board. In 1997 he became the first Hmong American to run for Mayor of Wausau finishing in second place.
