CA Governor Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill-895 Pupil instruction: model curricula: Vietnamese American refugee experience, the Cambodian genocide, and Hmong history and cultural studies on Sept 22. The Bill was approved by the California Assembly 39 in favor and 0 against on August 31. Read LA Time’s article about the bill from last month.

Model curriculum will be adopted by December 31, 2022 to teach about Vietnamese Americans, the Cambodian genocide and Hmong history and cultural studies in K-12 schools. Read more of the SB 895.

Previously Assembly Bill 2002: Hmong history and cultural studies was introduced but did not pass on its own in the Assembly but the language from AB 2002 was incorporated into SB 895.

However the bill did not include language about Lao and other ethnic Lao minorities as pointed out in this article.
