Cultural Appreciation vs Appropriation1 min read

There are ways to respect and appreciate other cultures rather than appropriate it for profit. For instance actress Brie Larson in February 2016 wore these Hmong clothes from Sapa, Vietnam. She acknowledged the clothes were made by Hmong and will read more about their history.

Cultural appropriation is not OK when designer call Hmong skirts as “cape” or sell it for tens of thousands off Hmong fabric arts.

Another example is celebrity Jeannie Mai who in August 2016 travel with a nonprofit organization in Sapa to return two Hmong girls back to their village after they were trafficked.
